Playing poker with your friends in the comfort of your home is very different when playing poker in a casino. There are certain rules and unspoken etiquette you should follow when you go into a gambling establishment. One of the things you’ll need to know about is a “buy in”. Here’s all you should know about buy-ins before you attempt to gamble publicly.

A buy-in refers to the amount of money a player needs to add to the pot before playing a round of poker. This amount can depend on if the game has a limit or has no limit. Buy-ins are part of the winnings and a certain amount of the buy-in will go towards the casino for arranging the event.

When you enter a poker game, it will either have an upper and lower limit or have no limit at all. If you’re playing a game that has a limit then you’ll be able to add any number of chips as long as it stays in between those two limits.

Games that require no limit are usually played with a lot of money so if you don’t want to bet a lot at one time you’re better off playing games with a limit. This does not mean you’re not allowed to raise later on. The buy-in is just the initial bet. This amount will have to be paid after every round of poker.

How Much To Add to the Buy-In

You might ask yourself what the point of adding more money to the buy-in is. Why wouldn’t every player just put in the minimum amount when you don’t even know what cards you’re going to be dealt? It’s all about a player’s strategy.

The first thing you should consider when paying the buy-in is how much money you have available. If you put in a large chunk of your betting amount your night is most likely going to be short. No player should play more than 10% of their bankroll especially when you’re in a situation where you’re in need of money.

When I say players shouldn’t “play” more than 10% of their bankroll I mean that you shouldn’t even have it on the table. Players who have more experience playing poker often play with big bets but if you don’t know what strategy you want to use then place a small amount of chips on the table. If you have all of your available chips on the table they could potentially all go into the pot and you’ll be broke.

Another thing you should consider is how much time you have available to play. A player that has less time on their hands will usually put in a larger sum into the buy-in so that they could potentially win more many quicker. If you have more time then you should bet less because you have more time to play more rounds.

And of course you need to think of your capabilities. If you aren’t very good at playing poker you shouldn’t rely solely on luck and bet big especially if your opponents are very good at poker. When more chips are in the pot the decisions you make tend to be harder because they’re worth more. Inexperienced players aren’t sure what move would be best.

Re-buying in Poker

If you wish to continue playing a game of poker you’re allowed to buy more chips. This is referred to as a re-buy. The procedures for a re-buy depend on what the rules the casino follows and what kind of game you’re playing.

If you’re playing a cash game then you’ll have to wait until the hand is over to pay cash for chips. This means that if you have a really good hand but can’t meet the bet then you’ll lose your hand which is another reason to keep your buy-in small. Re-buying is usually allowed for a limited amount of times.

Every tournament follows a different set of rules. Because there’s usually a certain amount of chips you need to have in order to play the game you’ll need to re-buy in order to keep participating.

However, during tournaments you can only re-buy during a certain period of time. These periods vary for every tournament and you should check these specifications before playing any games. If you go under the amount needed for the tournament then you are out so you need to make sure you have an adequate number of chips before the period is up.

What Does “Under the Gun” Mean in Poker?

Under the gun is referring to the person who has to bet first which gives them a disadvantage. Players who bet first don’t get to see what the other players positions are and how much they are willing to bet.

The player who is under the gun is the players who is directly left of the dealer. Unless specified in a poker game, they are the first ones to bet before a flop. It’s called under the gun because of the pressure it puts on this player.

What is the Best Position to be in Poker?

The best spot to sit in poker is the spot that is immediately to the right of the poker dealer. Like I previously stated, the player to the left of the dealer has the worst spot because they are the first to bet. The player to the right is the last to bet and therefore gets to see all the other players positions on their cards and what they decide to bet.
