Recently I’ve developed an interest in foosball and was looking into learning more about foosball tables. I was wondering what was the regulation size of a foosball table.

So I did some research into foosball tournaments and figured out the size and optimal way of setting up an official regulation foosball table.

So what is the official foosball table dimensions? Full size foosball tables  are about 2 ½ feet wide and nearly 5 feet in length. A regulation foosball table should be 30 inches wide, 56 inches in length, and 36 inches in height.

The Majority of foosball tables are in regulation size or very close to regulation size. Note majority of these official dimensions are based on North American foosball rules.

This measurement in width of an official foosball table only applies to the table and does not include the size of the table with the rods used in play. The foosball rods that holds the players can add an additional 12 to 18 inches to the total width of the table when the rods are extended.

For the rest of the table the standard rod size is ⅝” in diameter. There should be a 6 inch gap between each of the rods on your table. The open goal hole at the both ends of a foosball table should be close to  8.375 inches wide and 3 inches tall.

Serious Foosball players put a lot of thought into their table setups for tournaments as well as recreational play to insure fair play. But table size is not the only thing you need to consider when thinking about official rules of foosball.  There are also a couple of other variables that a player needs to consider when setting up a proper foosball table for proper tournament play.

How much space do you need for a Foosball Table?

For best space for playing foosball you need a minimum of 10 feet by 7 feet space in order to have proper playing space for your regulation size foosball table. That will be enough room for your table as well as enough space for your players to play. This will also give you enough room to retrieve the ball from the goal.

As a general rule, you need an extra 3 to 4 feet on each side of the foosball table in order to have ample space for the players and a fully extended rod. That way you can pull the rods and extend them all the way back without hitting walls, seats or people. The goal is to have enough additional space so people can play the game and move around freely. You want enough space for people to move back and away from the table without bumping into anything.

If your foosball table is in a busy or highly trafficked space, make sure to leave enough space to avoid having people from bumping into each other.

How much does a standard foosball table weigh?

Full size standard foosball tables vary a lot in weight. There are some tables that weigh less than 100 lbs while there are other models of the same dimensions that can weigh up to 400 lbs.

Why does the weight of the tables vary so much? Because there is no regulation on what the tables are made of, so there is a lot of variation in the materials of each foosball table surface.

So there are various styles of foosball tables that are made of various materials from plastic, wood, metal, to stone. In American foosball the rods are generally made of hollow steel and the players on the rods are traditionally plastic.

Also depending on where you are every country’s foosball table favors different materials. French foosball tables favors a on a linoleum surface with a cork ball.  American table usually plays on a solid table (generally wood) and the ball is made of thick plastic with plastic men. German tables have a soft surface, forcing players to have more control over the ball. Italian tables have a mix from glass or plastic laminate.

Each of these variables contribute to the style of play and the level of control a player have over the ball on the foosball table.

What is regulation size of a foosball?

While there is a standard size for a foosball table, there is no standard size for foosball balls. Foosball balls come in many different sizes and weights. Foosballs ranging from 1.25” - 1.5” have all been used in tournament play.

How many players on a foosball table?

The foosball table comes with a total of 22 players in the table OR 26 players in the table. The foosball table with 22 players is the official regulation size. The players are controlled by the rods. Official foosball tournaments have tables with both 22 or 26 players. The main difference between two is that one has 1 goalie and the other has 3 goalies.

22 players table  is broken down into two teams with 11 players on each team.

Both teams has the following players and positions

  • 1 x Goalkeeper
  • 2 x Defensive Players
  • 5 x Midfielders
  • 3 Strikers

26 player table is broken down into two teams with 13 players on each team

  • 3 x Goalkeeper
  • 2 x Defensive Players
  • 5 x Midfielders
  • 3 x Strikers

Does the foosball table need to be level?

Yes, having a leveled foosball table insures fair game that both teams are on equal footing. Otherwise you risk an unfair advantage to one team because the ball will naturally roll towards one direction on the table.

So how do you level a foosball table?

A lot of foosball tables have adjustable legs that screw to adjust up or down.

If your table has adjustable legs, first make sure that the are tightened all the way before measuring with your level. The best practice in setting up a leveled foosball table is to get a level and measure the table horizontally and vertically, adjusting the legs until the bubble is in the middle of the level.

If your table does not have adjustable legs, then use spacers (blocks, cardboard, etc) and put them under the legs until the table is leveled.

Is it illegal to spin a foosball?

Yes it is illegal to spin a foosball. Spinning is illegal in official foosball. Spinning as defined by the International Table Soccer Federation (ITSF) is stated as “ the rotation of any soccer figure more than 360 degrees before or more than 360° after striking the ball.” Spinning in foosball is considered cheating. In informal recreational playing, spinning is a huge and unfair advantage.

How many people can play foosball?

An official foosball game can be played in singles (one person on each side) or doubles (two people on each side). In doubles generally one player will control the defensive players rod and their teammate on the same side will control the offensive players on the rod.  Each team will control the rods that have handles on their side.

In informal matches people can often play with three or four players on each side of the foosball table.

Why is it called foosball?

Foosball is an American term. It’s derived from the German word of the same pronunciation “fussball” the German word for football (also known to Americans as soccer). The formal name for the game is Table Soccer, but Americans call it foosball.
