There are a lot of regulations when it comes to tournament style ping pong tables and its other accessories. Watching the ping pong Olympic event I thought that their tables looked a little bit smaller than the other tournament styles ping pong table I’ve seen. I decided to do some research to determine how small Olympic style tables were compared to other tables.

Contrary to what many people believe, the Olympic ping pong table size is about the same size as your average ping pong table. Olympic style ping pong tables need to be 9 feet long, 5 feet wide, and about 2.5 feet tall.

There are not many variations of ping pong table sizes. When you buy any good quality table they’re most likely going to have the same dimensions as any table in the Olympics. However, there are some other specifications that your table might not be following.

In all reality, a ping pong table can really be made out of anything as long as it doesn’t effect the game play. This is specified in the Olympic table regulation rules. The table top of the table can be made out of anything as long as a ping pong ball bounces 9.05 inches from a height of 11.8 inches.

Every other part of the table (not including the accessories) can be made out of any other material that will be sturdy enough to avoid moving during game play. Pieces such as paddles, nets, and the ball have strict specifications on their materials.

For all official Olympic ping pong tables they need to be covered with a dark colored paint. This will help the players see the ping pong ball much better. Along all of the edges, there should be a 2 cm white line. The side each player will play on will be determined by the net at the center of the table.

For doubles, it varies by just a bit. The only thing that you have to add to the table is the line that goes down the middle of the long way of the table. You will need something to define each section of the table for doubles. This is unnecessary for singles ping pong.

Buying a Table

If you want to buy a regulation-sized table you won’t have too much trouble doing so. This is what most people want. It allows for the perfect amount of room with the perfect amount of power to a player’s hits.

There are some smaller tables that are available. These are referred to as mini tables or box tables. Sizes of these smaller tables can be 7 x 3.5 feet or smaller. Typically, these tables are meant to be for children.

If you want to invest in a ping pong table you’ll need plenty of room to play comfortably. This is the reason why most people keep their tables in their basements or in their garages. For a regulation-sized table you should have a room of at least 19 x 11 feet. This gives you ample room to dive for side shots or back up for long shots.
